Trophy Shot

Sat, 07/17/2010 - 08:52

The 2010 Wicked Big Meet was the second time I attended this event. The first time I attended in 2009 my FXT was only lightly-modded and I was not aware of the car show that is held at the event. Since I had put a ton of time, effort and money into my car in late 2009/early 2010, I figured I would enter the 2010 WBM car show.

My motivation to do so was not with any hope of winning. Yes, my FXT had undergone a substantial transformation since the 2009 event, but more than anything I entered just for the fun of it. Having the opportunity to show my car and talk with other enthusiasts about it made it IMO worth the $50 entry fee.

Regardless of the usual WBM wet weather, the 2010 event was certainly well attended. Hundreds of gorgeous, nicely-modded Subies filled the parking lot, but surprisingly, there were only about a dozen cars entered in the car show. Out of all the cars entered, my car was the only “non-Impreza.”

In the weeks leading up to the event, I kept my eye on the WBM website to see what the show categories would be. I had thought that there may be a category that my FXT would fit well in, perhaps a “Wagon” or even Forester category. Just before the event, the categories were finally listed; Best in Show, Best Female Ride, Best Audio and Best Performance. Other than maybe showing up in drag and entering the Best Female Ride category, I didn’t think that my car could do well in any of them.

After parking my FXT near the end of the car show line up, the show judges came by to have us fill out the entry forms. I was asked what category I wanted to enter the FXT in and with a shrug I stated that the Best in Show seemed the most logical. The judge suggested I select another category because Best in Show was what everyone else was placing their cars in. Figuring that it really didn’t make any difference because I didn’t expect to win anything, I went with the Best Performance category.

Much to the surprise of all (including me), my FXT was awarded the Best Performance category. Perhaps it was the fact there were just so few cars entered in the show, I am nonetheless truly honored to have had my FXT recognized.

Hopefully, my humble (and perhaps undeserved) win will motivate others to enter the WBM car show next year.

2002 WRX Rollcage

Fri, 07/16/2010 - 22:27
Hey so this is pretty simple, I am looking for the cheapest guy in New England that will fabricate a roll cage for my 2002 wrx sedan... This is pretty simple... Please pm offers... I would drive the car to the location...

Specs include full roll cage.. Pretty much follow the frame / roof line of the car.

and I did a little research...

SCCA GCR in the cage spec for Showroom Stock/Touring/Improved Touring (IT) says for cars 3001 to 4000 lbs the material needs to be:

1.75 x .120 DOM/Seamless/Alloy - No ERW allowed

I am no expert in roll cages, but currently I hill climb and eventually want to rally down the road. Someone with more knowledge than me might be able to offer me better specs. Either way please give me some offers. I could buy a kit and install it myself, but I believe a professionally welded cage is not only safer, but also makes the car handle better. Thanks for the advice in advance... Matt

I had an extra so I'm only short 1. Question is can I start the car short one of the nuts and be fine until I can get to the dealership tomorrow?

Audi R8 Burns in CT

Thu, 07/15/2010 - 08:35
Members of the Fairfield Fire Department extinguish a car fire on the Merritt Parkway on Sunday. The Audi R8 belonged to a Powerball winner from Newington. According to reports, Rahul Patel, of Newington, was driving the car, only a week old, northbound on the parkway around 9 a.m., when, between exit 46 and 47 in Fairfield, he looked up in the rearview mirror and saw smoke. Anyone with extra space tonight for NEFR?

My driver and I changed our plans and are driving up tonight, but sadly we don't have lodging....

So, if anyone has some extra room for Tim and I, we'll buy some beer or whatever is deemed fair. Please let me know. Thanks.

I need a good exhaust shop on the cape.

Wed, 07/14/2010 - 00:52
I need a shop that can weld, and won't charge out the ass for the work, I guess it really doesn't matter if it's on the cape or not, but it would be nice. So if there any shops in the vicinity that are worth the money they charge, I would like to know where they are.

Thanx

From Subaru to…….

Tue, 07/13/2010 - 12:20
Cars Cars Cars…that is about all I can say. I seem to have a serious problem when it comes to them.

It started with my 2004 WRX that I bought new as the first car I actually purchased. It was a great car. In fact I still miss it to this day. I did some work to it, and was very proud that I did most of it myself.

I landed a great job in 2006 and after wanting for 3 years made the jump to a 2007 STi. It was all I wanted it to be. Better in every way than the WRX was. Anyone who tells you “you can make an STI from a WRX for blah blah blah” has not driven both as a DD back to back. If you are thinking about getting one, just do it!

In late 2009 I was getting the itch again. Starting looking around to see what I could afford. My main problem was the STI not being sure of its identity. In short it was a sports sedan, but didn’t play either card very well. I loved it; my GF disliked it because it was harsh all the time. It was small, but not small like I wanted. Nothing really sat right, is it a sedan or a sports car? I struggled with this for a few months. Looking at M3 or RS4, something that was more sedan (much better luxury and ride) but was every bit a sports car. Then I widened the search and starting looking at everything, maybe luxury is what I wanted. Lexus, Infinity, BMW, Audi, Mercedes…oh god what did I just get myself into. Slowly but surely I pushed model after model away for various reason and found myself looking at Porsche’s of all things. Spent a long time looking at 996 Turbos but decided the possibility of a huge repair cost was more than I was comfortable with. So in February I sold my STi, and to be honest I was happy and unhappy at the same time.

So what to do. I still didn’t have a car picked out. I was set on Porsche but nothing every looked right. After 2 months of back and forth, dealership visits, and test drives, a Carrera S was what I needed! I searched low and high and finally found the right one, with the right options, at the right price in….CALIFORNIA :( So a trip out to see it (combined with seeing my sister) was in order. I took delivery 1 day shy of 3 months from the date I last saw my STi. Destined for a 4 hour road trip that night, my GF and I packed into my new 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S and took off like a bat out of hell. There has been no looking back, it is great! It knows what it is and does it very well. Sure I could be happier if it was newer or some of the rock chips were not in the hood, but just like in any new adventure you have to start somewhere.

The day I got it. Very dirty...for now.

After my recent hand wash and dry with rims detail.

Are Subarus gone from my future? Not by a long shot. I plan to purchase back my 2004 WRX as soon as I can. My GF has a base model 07 Legacy that we love. She uses a beat old Forester for her doggy daycare business. I will be a Subaru fan for a long time to come I am Sure.

Thanks for reading.

need help finding a second opinion re: transmission issue

Mon, 07/12/2010 - 14:01
I am having problems with my transmission, and brought my car to a local respectable shop for their opinion.

The transmission make a terrible dry rubbing sound when in first and reverse, and sometimes has problems getting into these gears. When I step off the clutch to engage it into gear, the sound happens. So far, its just a nasty sound that makes the neighbors frown.

The local shop looked it over and thought it may be a "problem with the syncro" and to just drive it as-is until something else (worse) occurs. As this may be an ultimate transmission swap, might as well drive it until it does not want to cooperate anymore.

I am looking for a local person/shop in MA, preferably no further west than Worcester to give me a second opinion and an idea of what it may cost to source and swap the transmission.

Important to note:
- 2002 WRX wagon
- 112,000 miles
- original clutch
- second owner since 17,000 miles (originally a Subaru dealer driven vehicle)

Looking for a tuner in New England

Mon, 07/12/2010 - 12:48
I am looking for a good tuner in New England. I am willing to travle for a good tune. I would rather not buy an acess port if I dont have to. Who do you guys sugest?

I am located in central Mass but frequently travle to west CT. I have very little done to my car, just spt intake and samco intercooler y-pipe for now i want to talk to someone and get their openion on some parts. I do not intend on crossing the stage 2 point (I want to keep stock down pipe). So right now I guess I am just looking for someone that is a wealth of knowage and who could do tuning down the road. Like I said I would rather not buy an acesport because I will never use all the things it does. I just want a reflash. I dont see the point in paying for all the stuff the cobb does and never using it.
