1-Day Winter Safe Driving School: Jan 30th 2010

The New England Subaru Club, Inc (NESC) is, again, renting the Team O'Neil (TO) Facility for a 1 day Winter Safe Driving School: Jan 30th 2010.

Over the years many many people in the Subaru community have attended this TO class, so we are very happy to keep this as a club tradition. The new 'street' price, through TO, for the winter safe class is $395.00, but through NESC, Inc. the price is $275.00 (a significant discount).

For those of you not familiar with Team O'Neil's winter safety program here's what is taught, specific to AWD cars:

  • Understeer/Oversteer on snow skid pad
  • Vehicle weight transfer and tire grip exercises
  • Slalom snow/ice course
  • Steering/counter-steering on snow/ice
  • Emergency obstacle avoidance
  • Performance driving on snow and ice covered roads

This is a very safe and fun way to really know how to prevent/predict traction loss on snow and how to recover when you do loose it. The class is 25% classroom instruction and 75% in-car (in your car) instruction. You will always have an instructor in your car with you and passengers in your back seat. All instructors are trained by Tim O'Neil, the retired Pro-rally racer.

This 1-day class is also a prerequisite to the 2-day winter class; which is a great advanced winter skills program and introduction to winter rally techniques class.

If you learn one technique in this class that saves you from a bad winter 'off' or collision it will pay for it self; remember most insurance deductibles are $500.00. Also depending on what state you live in and what insurance company you have, you may be eligible for insurance discount too.

Requirements:

  • Payment in full
  • Subaru or AWD car
  • Snow tires on car; NO ALL SEASON TIRES! (exceptions: Nokian WRs or
    WRG2s)
  • No low profile tires (<50s, >55s are preferred)
  • Be aware that you may "off" and be willing to accept the consequences. (Generally only minor scratches and bruises to you car)
  • Bring your own lunch (the closest store is 6 miles away)
  • Dress warm (hat, warm shoes/socks, and driving gloves)
  • Remove all extra 'stuff' from your car that is not bolted in. (yes that means tool boxes, kegs, and sub-woofer boxes..)
  • Must have working seat belts front and rear.
  • No roll cages or harness bars please.
  • Be at the Hampton Hotel in Littleton, NH by 8:00am day of class.

Classes are reserved on a first come basis through registration/payment, you are not confirmed until the club receives payment though Pay Pal. The winter safe classes always fill up so please act quickly; we can only accept 12 people (but we will set up a waiting list if someone has to back out). There are no refunds, but you can transfer your spot to someone else or sell it to someone on the waitlist.

Also, a pre-class tech inspection check list will be sent out to people who register; nothing surprising, it's just too long to post here.
